I remember the day my running journey began. I was browsing the aisles at my favourite bookstore when, as if by magic, I turned my head almost completely around. There, on display, was the book “The Beginning Runners Handbook”. I picked it up, leafed through it, and noticed that it contained a 13-week walk/run program to transition someone like me (who had never been athletic EVER) to someone who could run 10 km or 1 hour continuously. Something about this program just FELT right.
Without giving it much thought, I found myself buying this book and embarking on the beginner program. Today, many years later, I have several half marathons and shorter distance races under my belt. When I tell people I’m a long distance runner they comment, “oh you must have always been athletic.” To which I chuckle and think. “OH, if they could have only seen me as a kid!” Pudgy, pigtails and usually with my head in a book — not exactly the picture of athleticism, is it? So to look at where I am today, compared to where I have come from, is pretty amazing.
For me, running is like meditation. It brings me a greater awareness of my body, and I get the BEST messages from my angels while I am running because my mind is clear. In fact, I have seriously considered taking my hand-held recorder with me because it’s tricky getting a great message an hour into a run only to realize I have to try to remember it all the way back to the car and then hope that I have something there to write it down on!
I realize I NEVER would have been able to experience the joy I have in my life now from running if I had not trusted the guidance that pointed me in the direction of the book that day in the bookstore.
