It sounds cliché but life can indeed change in an instant. Never was that more apparent to me than last August. At the beginning of that month we very suddenly, and very tragically, lost a beloved member of our family. Then just a few weeks later, still reeling from the pain and shock, I learned that one of my dearest teachers, Dr. Wayne Dyer had passed on. I felt like my world was crashing down on me.
This month brought these painful memories to the fore as a birthday passed without the presence of a loved one to celebrate with, and because it was just last May when I saw Dr. Dyer speak at the I Can Do It Conference in Edmonton.
Wayne opened his talk with the story of Bronnie Ware, an Australian hospice nurse who surveyed over 800 patients in the final days of their lives. She asked them if they would have lived their lives differently and if they had any regrets.
Do you know what the number one answer that people gave was?
It was this, “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself and not the life that others expected of me.”
I remember getting chills when that answer was revealed. I couldn’t imagine anything worse than spending your whole life not following your heart and not doing what speaks to you at the deepest soul level.
And yet, that’s how most people out there are living. They do it because they can’t overcome fear. But at the end of their days will they be happy with that?
If the Grim Reaper came knocking on your door tomorrow, would you have regrets?
Why do you think you have unlimited time to live the life you dream of? You don’t! NONE of us are guaranteed that we will wake up tomorrow. It’s not being morbid, it’s a fact.
So why do so many people stay stuck and wait for “someday”? You hear it all the time, ”Someday I’ll start that weight-loss program and gain control of my health, someday I’ll work harder and get promoted, someday I’ll learn how to manage my mindset so I can get better results in my business.”
Fear is why people stay stuck. It’s probably the biggest challenge people have but I have a newsflash for you…EVERYONE is scared! If you want to know how to overcome fear here’s the answer…it’s to do the very thing you fear over and over again until fear no longer has a grip on you.
Og Mandino says, “Failure will never overtake me, if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” So if you want something badly, but fear is holding you back, ask yourself this question, “What scares me more?”
Is it the fear of not knowing HOW to do something, or what the outcome will be if you do, or is it waking up day after day, unfulfilled, sad, and disconnected from your purpose (or worse yet, coming to the end of your life with regrets).
What scares you more?
Now ask yourself this, “What am I willing to do about it?”
Is today the day you will finally take charge of your life and start living the life that’s true to you rather than the life that everyone else expects?
Are you ready to get off of the fantasy island called “Someday I’ll” and start creating the life you truly want today?
As Confucius said, “It does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop.”
