Although I was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Canada, I’ve been a proud Calgarian for almost 20 years. So what’s one of the first things you buy when you move here? Cowboy boots! I mean, you cannot wear running shoes to the Calgary Stampede, okay?!
Cowboy boots are iconic to our city but for me, they are much more than that. They’re a symbol of one of my favourite mindset hacks.
If you’ve ever experienced the machine-wash spin-cycle in your head, then you will definitely want to pay attention to what I’m about to share with you.
What the heck is the “spin-cycle” you ask?
It’s when you’re having an inner debate on whether or not you should do this or should do that? Or when you are constantly second-guessing yourself and your self-doubt is so strong that you feel paralyzed to do anything? Or when your inner critic is telling you that your ideas are stupid and that nobody will want to work with you or buy your products and blah, blah, blah. Well that’s the spin-cycle and THAT, my friends is when you Get In Your Boots!
That is when you STOP, take three to five big deep breaths and picture yourself putting on a pair of boots. They can be UGGS, mukluks, fabulous designer booties or yes, even your finest pair of cowboy boots. It doesn’t matter. The key is to get OUT of your head and back into the present moment so you can stop the thoughts that are spinning out of control. When you bring your attention to your feet you instantly ground yourself and you become more centered (see, there’s a method to my madness).
We get so caught up in our heads, and the subsequent sabotaging thinking that (frighteningly) drives our actions, that we’re like zombies running on auto-pilot. It’s like we just blindly listen to whatever our inner critic tells us, all the while, believing that it’s our “logical” mind telling us what is best.
Do you know where this behavior gets you? It puts you on the fast track to nowhere fast. In fact, when you listen to your inner critic and live in the spin-cycle zone, you end up putting the majority of your time and energy into things that are pulling you further and further away from your purpose rather than keeping you in alignment with it. And when you are not following your purpose, you fill unfulfilled, cranky and miserable. I know. I’ve been there once upon a time and it totally sucks!
So get good at recognizing what your thoughts are telling you, and the minute you recognize that you’re headed for the spin cycle, step away from your laptop or whatever you’re doing, and take some big deep breaths. As you breath in say, “I’ve got this” as you breathe out, visualize yourself holding a big black trash bag in each hand which are filled with all your mental “garbage” and throw it away. After taking a few breaths like this, get in your boots! Imagine putting them on and what they feel like against your feet. Then imagine standing in them. Picture yourself standing tall, standing proud, standing with confidence. Remember, you’ve got this!
