Have you ever had one of those moments? You know, when something doesn’t go to plan and you want to give up. Have you ever noticed what you’re thinking in those moments? Have you told yourself things like, “Obviously this isn’t working, I might as well quit” or “This is too hard, I can’t keep going.”
I call this place the vortex of despair. It’s not a nice place to hang out in but somewhere all entrepreneurs end up in every now and again. Sadly, I had a little detour there myself lately but this time, rather than being an active participant in the dialogue in my head, I decided to be a third-party observer.
Observing the dialogue between my “I can do it angel” on one shoulder and my “Woe is me devil” on the other, led me to a revelation which was this, we are not our emotions. Our emotions are driven by our thoughts and our thoughts are impacted by our hormones and let’s face it, a woman’s hormones can really send you on a roller coaster ride sometimes!
Because you are feeling low doesn’t mean you are a failure and can’t do it. There can be a whole host of internal and external things going on that have triggered that thinking. So don’t allow yourself to get sucked into the self-criticism that likes to take advantage of your low points and tell you all the reasons you can’t or shouldn’t do something.
So how exactly do you do that? Go back to your big WHY. Why did you start your business in the first place? Do you love to serve and help people? Are you an entrepreneur so you can be there for your kids and have the freedom and flexibility to be present in their lives? Is it because you are compelled to make a change in the world?
Whatever the reason is, write out it out and put it someplace you can see it in your office. Make it BIG, add pictures, put sparkles on it, make it pretty! Then, whenever you feel yourself sliding into the vortex, stop what you are doing, take some nice big deep breaths and spend a few moments looking at your WHY. Really connect with it. If it doesn’t evoke a feeling in you, then it’s time to take a deeper look inside and ask if your work is in alignment with who you truly are. Because if it isn’t, it doesn’t matter how much inner work you do or how many coaches you work with, you will never achieve the level of success you desire. But that’s a topic for another day…
Why do I do what I do? Its because I want to inspire people. I want people to say, “because of you, I didn’t give up.” But more than that, it’s because I am an authentic, compassionate and visionary leader committed to helping self-sabotaging entrepreneurs get out of their own way so they can make money doing what they love and live their ideal (not just their possible) life! And I know that you have a big purpose to serve. I know that you were born because people need the gifts, talents and skills that you have to offer right now. If you let your emotions win, you won’t see the results you want in your business and you just may quit. And that would be a full-blown tragedy!
So don’t do that. Please don’t do that. Recognize that you are not your feelings or emotions. You have a big purpose to share. So when you want to give up, stop… breathe…re-set your mindset and go be unstoppable!
