I’ve never been a big TV watcher but I have to admit, back in the day I was totally addicted to Seinfeld. I think part of its allure was that the situations portrayed on the show were highly relatable to what most of us have experienced (at some time or other) in our everyday lives.
One of my favourite episodes is where George Costanza realizes that his life is going nowhere. He’s lost his job and has had to move back in with is parents and he comes to the realization that every decision he’s ever made in his life has been wrong.
His life is the complete opposite of everything he wants it to be. To rectify things, he decides to start doing the total opposite of what he normally would do. As Jerry says, “If every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right.”
To his amazement, once he starts to do the opposite of what his instincts would normally have him do, his life turns around. He meets an attractive woman and gets his dream job.
So, what about you?
What if you were to stop listening to the negative voices in your head that tell you things like, “I’m not qualified to do this,” “this idea probably won’t work,” or “I can’t charge that amount for my programs” and instead did the opposite?
What if…instead of turning down a speaking gig because you didn’t feel prepared you said, “Hell yeah, sign me up!?”
What if…instead of under-charging for your services you recognized all the expertise and value you bring to the table and raised your rates?
What if…instead of not hosting your own webinar because you didn’t know how you said, I will find a way?”
So I’ve got a challenge for you.
What if….you spend the next few days making decisions and taking action on things without listening to the voice in your head that’s trying to talk you out of doing what you know is best?
Do you think you can do it?
Challenge yourself to do the exact opposite of what your ego is trying to tell you to keep you in your comfort zone.
Will it feel uncomfortable? YES
Will it feel scary? YES
Could it change your life? Well you won’t know now will you until you give it a shot!
So what’s it gonna be? Staying with tuna on toast? Or going for chicken salad on rye? The ball’s in your court.
PS – If you need reinforcement, you can try this…put a rubber band around your wrist. Each time you hear that voice popping in telling you all the reasons you can’t/shouldn’t do something snap that band! It’s a very tactile reminder of just how many negative thoughts we process in a day! Try this for a few days and you will really get a sense of the necessity of “minding your mind.” If you want to take it a step further you can try wearing it for three days or even a whole month! Good luck.
