As great as our intentions are each year, there are always things that will pop up to derail us. You know it, and I know it.
The good news is, there are definitely some things you can be doing on a regular basis to really boost your success factor.
I’ve created my Top 10 Success Habits list for 2016 and wanted to share it with you in the hopes that you will be inspired to establish some of these same habits or create your own.
MOVE IT — Find a time each day to move your body in a way that feels good for you. For me, I get up and run first thing 3-4 times per week. Pounding the pavement may not be your thing but try setting a timer every hour to remind you to get up and move. Take a short walk (preferably outside), briskly walk or run up and down a set of stairs a few times or do some light stretches. Our bodies were built to move so move it or lose it.
If you lack motivation to move, dig deep for WHY it’s important to you. I run for a number of reasons including health, mental clarity and meditation but I also watched a show about people who were paralyzed and hearing young people say they would give anything to be able to run or walk one more time moved me very deeply. So on those mornings when I really don’t want to get out of bed, I say to myself, “I run for those who can’t.”
TOOL TIME — Create a tool box full of things that will help you get out of a slump when you are having a down day. My “go-to” is music so when my ego is yammering away and won’t shut up, I put on my Don’t Stop Believing Playlist and rock out to all the great songs that pump me up and help reboot my self-belief. I also have a file on my computer called “I Rock”. When I am having a bad day, I open it up and spend a few minutes reading through all the kind notes, testimonials and success stories that client and friends have sent to me and it instantly lifts my mood and makes me feel strong and powerful!
GET OUT FROM BEHIND YOUR DESK! — Commit to going to one networking event each month or find a local Meet-Up group with a shared interest of yours so you can get out and meet new people. Connection is part of our human directive and if you’re an entrepreneur, establishing a solid referral network is one of the keys to building a strong business. And wouldn’t you rather have people sending you ideal clients then having to constantly find them yourself? Remember, success isn’t always from what you know but from who you know.
TAKE A ME DAY! — Take out your 2016 calendar right now and each month, block off one complete day. This is your ME DAY where you get to do whatever the heck you want! Nap, shop, get your nails done, snuggle up and read a great book, take a workshop, have lunch with a friend. YOU get to choose with no guilt attached. It’s not selfish to take care of yourself, it’s good hygiene. You don’t beat yourself up for taking a shower. So don’t beat yourself up for taking a ME DAY! When you are refreshed and re-charged everyone else in your life gets the best of you.
TALK TO THE UNIVERSE — In order to get what you want, you have to “put it out there”. Despite thinking that the stars will magically align in your favour by sheer luck, that’s not how it actually works in real life. You have Free Will and the Universe cannot intervene on your behalf until you give it permission. So ask away and always remember to add this tagline, “please bring me this or something even better!” You can ask out loud, silently in your head or write it down in a pretty journal.
STAY GROUNDED — Putting it mildly, life has a tendency to throw us curveballs every now and again. So don’t get caught in overwhelm. Have a plan! When you notice that things are starting to get a little crazy, stop what you are doing and ground yourself. One of my favourite methods for doing this is to literally go outside and lie down on the ground (okay maybe not in -35 winter weather), but if you live where it’s not too bad out, go for it. You can also put your bare feet into the grass, snow, sand etc. Or take a bath with sea salt added to the water or even just soak your feet in a basin with sea salt. If you are into stones and crystals, you can hold or carry some hematite. Works like a charm! Just remember to clear it first if you buy them brand new. Or to just breathe. I like to work with this mantra, “Inhale, I calm my body. Exhale I smile.”
GUARD YOUR ENERGY LIKE FORT KNOX! — We pay a lot of attention to our physical body and totally neglect the centres of energy within us that are vital to our well-being. If you ever feel exhausted and drained, or sad or mad for no reason, it means your energy is being affected by people, places and situations around you. Not good! You can protect yourself in a few different ways. One of them is to use white sage. You can buy some of this dried plant, light it on fire and use the smoke to purify and cleanse you. You can also ask the Universe to place a shield of light around you. I like to work with angels so I ask Archangel Michael (the protector) to encircle me in the white light of protection. And when I have to go into places with a lot of people or with heavy or toxic energy, or interact with negative people, I add layers of pink and green light or picture myself in a mirrored disco ball. The negative energy coming my way just bounces off my sparkly mirrors and is deflected! Always shield yourself before going into a workplace, environment with many people (malls, schools, hospitals, airports etc.) and before you have any interactions with negative or toxic people.
MEDITATE — Okay, quit your groaning. I hear you saying, “Are you kidding me? Who has time to meditate?” Well I would bet good money that you have at least 5 minutes in your day, am I wrong? And now you’re saying, “What’s the point in meditating for only five minutes?” Well only you can answer that. Start doing it. Notice how you feel, AND how effective you are when you meditate vs. when you don’t. Start with Headspace. This app is amazing – especially for those who say they’ve tried to meditate and it doesn’t work for them. Take the 10-day challenge. Andy will walk you through everything you need to get started and I bet that after hearing his hypnotic voice for 10 days you will be hooked! By the way, successful people are those who take inspired action. That means, they put their time and energy into the things that are coming from spirit (which keeps them in alignment with their path and purpose) vs putting time and energy into things that are taking them further away from it.
WATCH YOUR THOUGHTS — Our thoughts create our reality, and science is now proving that. If you don’t believe me, take a look at your life. If it’s not where you want it to be, notice what types of thoughts you think. If your attention is on all the things you can’t have and can’t do, then you won’t have them and you won’t be able to do them. If your attention is on the benefits, blessings and good fortune flowing into your life, then you will find more and more of those things showing up. A great tool to keep your thoughts focused on the things you want is affirmations. John Assaraf calls them your “to be” list and I love that! One of my favourite affirmations is “Everything Works Out for Me”. Try repeating this daily (with belief and FEELING) and watch what happens. I talk more about using affirmations effectively in my video series, “The Three Essential Steps to Getting Anything You Want in Life.” You can sign up to get the videos for free here.
SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT — Have you heard the saying, “When you are clear, what you want will show up in your life, but only to the extent that you are clear?” Well it’s 110% true! Clarity is the first step to everything! Once you know what you want, focus on it and take the necessary action steps, it’s almost impossible not to get it. While our intentions are good, life likes to distract us from what we truly want. So a great way to keep your eyes on the prize, so to speak is to spend 5-10 minutes every day visualizing what you desire. “Visualization” is a highly effective technique but the word itself is misleading because to do it effectively, you need to bring in all the senses. Close your eyes and imagine yourself being/doing or having what you desire. Use all your senses to create a full sensory experience. FEEL, SMELL, SEE, HEAR and truly immerse yourself in that scene. If you really don’t know what you truly want in your life, then let’s talk. One of my super-powers is helping people uncover the things that are critical to their happiness and well-being and helping them create the plan to get it.
Please DO NOT attempt to pack all 10 of these habits into your day-to-day routine right away. That’s just a sure-fire way to put you into overwhelm. Choose one that speaks to you and commit to it for the next month. Then, when you have mastered it, move on to another one. Before you know it, you will make 2016 a smashing success!
