One of my greatest teachers, Wayne Dyer, said “You are the sum total of your choices.”
Take a moment to let that sink in.
It’s a liberating thought. When you recognize that you have choice in every moment, it’s freeing.
Even a prisoner in a cell has a choice about how they view their circumstances.
But the problem today is that too many people are NOT choosing. They let their habits and patterns do the choosing for them and in fact, they’re running their lives on autopilot.
Do you think that people who have amazing health, financial abundance, loving and connected relationships and their dream careers or businesses got there by running on autopilot?
They consciously CHOOSE everything.
But the ones who really have it going on, make their choices and decisions by checking in with their Inner Guidance too.
Let me give you an example of what happens when you’re running on autopilot.
Pre 9-11, I worked for Canadian Airlines in the marketing department for their frequent flyer program. Although the head office was in Calgary I frequently had meetings in Vancouver so I would fly in for the day.
Being new to the airline, I had very low seniority and on this particular day, the flight was so full that the only seat left for me was in the cockpit (for real)! It was a tiny flip-down spot behind the Captain and Co-captain known as “the jump seat”.
As I sat down, the pilot pulled out this five-point harness that looked like it belonged in a 1950’s bomber and strapped me in. The security spiel went something like this, “No non-essential conversation under 10,000 feet and if there’s an emergency we’re either going out through the windshield or we’re coming out over top of you.”
I zipped my lip and let them do their thing. Once we were flying high above the pristine Rocky Mountains the Captains turned around in their seats and started chatting with me. It seemed disconcerting until I realized they had set the plane to autopilot.
No steering required.
A loud alarm sounded and an urgent automated voice warning, “TRAFFIC! TRAFFIC! TRAFFIC!” forced the pilots back to work!
If the plane had stayed on autopilot, it would have been a disaster as another aircraft was in our airspace. But the Captains heeded the guidance system that told them to descend a few thousand feet to avert collision.
Now let’s look at a real-life example of what happens when you’re running on autopilot.
You’re in your 40’s, can’t seem to lose weight, feel tired and sluggish and just don’t like what you see in the mirror.
You feel like you’re battling hormones and that you’re just destined to put on weight because that’s what happens as you age.
But let’s say a Facebook ad pops up inviting you to a webinar that promises to share the Top 3 Tips to Look & Feel Fab at Any Age.
In that moment, you have a CHOICE.
You can tune in and maybe learn a few tricks on how to work with, rather than against, your metabolism or you can just listen to your mind telling you that it won’t matter what you try because you’ve done it all before and nothing works.
In other words, you can decide to run on autopilot and stay stuck where you are. And in doing so, you’re CHOOSING to believe your mind story that all women in middle-age are destined to put on weight and feel tired and sluggish.
You were guided to see the webinar pop up on Facebook, but you CHOSE not to follow that guidance.
See how that works?
So I have some HOMEWORK for you this week.
Take a look at the choices you’ve been making lately in ALL areas of your life…
Do you see any patterns?
Are they healthy or unhealthy?
What can you change or heal?
What’s ONE step you can take today to move yourself in that direction?
Post it in the comments so we can all support one another.
Here’s to happy choosing!
